LONDON ROYAL BALLET CAREER

Brief overview of the London Royal Ballet Career Pippa Wylde

Pippa Wylde

Born in Nigeria, the youngest of five daughters born to a colonial family, Pippa returned to England when she was just nine years of age to attend an international vocational boarding school that specialised in dance. It was during this period that Pippa’s natural talent for classical ballet emerged and was developed to a level whereby she successfully auditioned for a place at the Royal Ballet School in London.

Within a year of joining the Royal Ballet School, and at the tender age of only 17, her abilities were rewarded when she was chosen to become one of the youngest dancers to be accepted into the London Royal Ballet Company at Covent Garden, one of the most respected classical ballet companies in the world.  Details of Pippa’s 120 performances at Covent Garden can be found on the Royal Opera House performance database website.

During her time with the London Royal Ballet Company, Pippa quickly rose to the position of senior soloist, working with some of the world’s most talented choreographers including Sir Kenneth MacMillan, Sir Frederick Ashton, David Bintley and Michael Corder.  She also danced in leading roles in ballets such as Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Romeo and Juliet, Giselle and Cinderella, to name but a few.

ROMEO & JULIET

Romeo and Juliet is one of the most celebrated romantic stories of all time, with Romeo considered to be the quintessential romantic hero. Upon closer analysis, Romeo can be characterized as a young man who is completely transformed by love. This can be seen in Romeo’s initial interest in Rosaline which is superficial and passive in comparison to the more complex and active relationship he later develops with Juliet.

Pippa danced the role of ‘Rosaline’ in this London Royal Ballet performance at Covent Garden.

SWAN LAKE

Swan Lake was Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky’s first score for ballet. Its 1877 premiere was poorly received, but it has since become one of the most loved of all ballets. The twinned role of the radiant White Swan and the scheming, duplicitous Black Swan tests the full range of a ballerina’s powers, particularly in the two great pas-de-deux of Acts II and III. Other highlights include the charming Dance of the Little Swans performed by a moonlit lake and sweeping ballroom waltzes in the splendour of the royal palace.

Pippa danced the main role of ‘Odette Odile’ in a later production of this London Royal Ballet performance at Covent Garden.

THE NUTCRACKER

In 1891, world renowned choreographer, Marius Petipa commissioned Peter Tchaikovsky to compose the music for Alexandre Dumas’s adaptation of E.T.A. Hoffman’s tale “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.” In 1954, George Balanchine, another world renowned choreographer, created a new production. His innovative choreography sparked the imagination of viewing audiences. Since then, The Nutcracker has been the most widely performed ballet in the world.

Pippa danced the role of ‘Lead Flower’ in this London Royal Ballet performance at Covent Garden.

LA FILLE MAL GARDEE

La Fille Mal Gardee displays some of Sir Frederick Ashton’s most virtuoso choreography – the youthful passion of Lise and her lover, Colas, is expressed in a series of energetic pas de deux. The ballet is laced with good humour and a whirl of dancing chickens, grouchy guardians and a halfwit suitor take to the stage. Ashton affectionately incorporated elements of national folk dance into his choreography, making La Fille Mal Gardée (despite its title) The Royal Ballet’s most emphatically English work.

Pippa danced the role of ‘A Friend’ in this London Royal Ballet
performance at Covent Garden.
