Studio Equipment
Matwork
Matwork is considered by many to be the essence of the 'Pilates Method' and is
excellent if you have no special fitness issues and are generally in good health
with no chronic conditions. Usually taught as part of a group session, mat
exercises primarily focus on strengthening the abdominal muscles whilst increasing
the flexibility of both spine and hips. Whilst the scope of the mat programme
may be somewhat limited compared to that of machine driven (see 'Studio Reformer'
below) exercises, matwork is still capable of effectively working on all eight
Pilates principles.
For the comfort of our clients, all matwork exercises are undertaken on our 'Studio
Reformers' that have been fitted with a special full-length matwork conversion
(as shown opposite). A selection of specially designed pillows and cushions
are also available to ensure the total comfort of our clients while exercises
are being performed.
Small Apparatus
A large selection of complimentary small apparatus is also used in conjunction
with matwork exercises such as the gym ball, supaflex bands, free weights, arm
and leg weights, stimulating 'spikey' balls and the wobble board, to name only
a few.
Studio Reformer
The Reformer is probably the single most important and widely recognised piece
of exercise equipment used today in Pilates resistance training. Originally
designed by Joseph H Pilates, the latest incarnation of this essential piece of
apparatus is known as the Studio Reformer. Available as part of our standard
studio equipment, this machine is 'state of the art' and is manufactured in the
United States by Pilates specialists, 'Balanced Body Inc.'. Superbly constructed,
smooth in operation and extremely quiet this is undoubtedly one of the most effective
pieces of Pilates equipment available today.
The Studio Reformer consists of a sliding carriage that is connected at one end
of its frame by a series of adjustable tension springs. The carriage can
either be moved by pulling on ropes or alternatively by pushing-off with the feet
from a setting adjustable fixed bar. Matwork exercises are also carried
out on this same piece of equipment when the complete mat conversion unit is installed
(see top 'Matwork' photograph).
The Studio
The studio is peacefully located with open views to the garden. Private
and semi-private sessions are conducted in tranquil surroundings where clients
can concentrate fully on their Pilates exercise routine whilst listening to background
music specially chosen to relax and soothe throughout the duration of the class.
Clients can of course bring along their own music to play during the sessions
if they so wish.
